The Hunter REEV is the first REEV bakkie sold in South Africa, and it arrives at a time when many local buyers are curious about electric driving but hesitant about charging infrastructure. The concept is not entirely new. The BMW i3 REx, launched in 2013, was one of the earliest mass-produced REEVs. It paired a small two-cylinder petrol range extender with an electric drivetrain. The Chevrolet Volt used a similar series-hybrid architecture. What is new is applying the concept to a full-sized double cab bakkie with genuine off-road and payload credentials.

How the Changan Hunter REEV Actually Works

The Hunter REEV pairs two electric motors (one on each axle) with a 31.18 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery and a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine. Here is the simplified version of how the system operates:

Step 1: Electric driving. You start on battery power. The dual-motor setup delivers a combined 200 kW and 470 Nm of torque, driving all four wheels electrically. Changan claims a pure-electric range of up to 145 km on the CLTC cycle.

Step 2: Battery depletes. When the lithium iron phosphate battery charge drops below a set threshold, the 2.0-litre turbopetrol engine starts automatically. It does not connect to the wheels. Instead, it spins a generator that produces electricity to recharge the battery while you drive.

Step 3: Extended range. With the 70-litre fuel tank feeding the generator, the Hunter REEV claims a combined range of up to 1,000 km between charges and fill-ups. In practice, local reviewers have measured real-world combined range in the region of 800 to 900 km, which is still exceptional for an electrified bakkie.

The result is that you are always driving an electric vehicle. The ride is smooth, the torque is instant, and the cabin is quieter than a conventional diesel bakkie. But you never have to worry about finding a charging station on a long trip, because the petrol generator handles that for you.

What REEV Means for South African Buyers

South Africa’s EV charging network is growing but remains patchy outside major metro areas. Long-distance routes between cities often have gaps, and load shedding adds another layer of uncertainty for home charging. This is the environment that makes a REEV bakkie particularly relevant.

With the Hunter REEV, you can charge at home overnight and drive your daily commute on pure electric power (most South African commutes fall well within the 145 km electric range). For longer trips, the petrol generator eliminates range anxiety entirely. You simply fill up at any petrol station, the same way you would with a diesel bakkie, and the generator handles the rest.

The Hunter REEV also delivers genuine bakkie capability: 1,000 kg payload, 2,200 kg braked towing capacity, 600 mm wading depth, 220 mm ground clearance and electric four-wheel drive with active yaw control. It is not a lifestyle EV pretending to be a bakkie. It is a bakkie with an electric drivetrain and a petrol safety net.

Fast charging from 30% to 80% takes around 30 minutes, and a separate charging port allows you to treat the Hunter as a full EV for daily use if you have access to a home or workplace charger.

Is REEV the Future for South African Bakkies?

It is too early to call REEV “the future”, but it is a compelling bridge technology for a market where full EV infrastructure is not yet mature. The concept solves the two biggest barriers to EV adoption in South Africa: range anxiety and charging access. You get the benefits of electric driving (lower running costs, instant torque, quieter cabin) without the trade-offs that make a full EV impractical for many bakkie buyers right now.

Whether the Changan Hunter REEV specifically is the right fit depends on how you use your bakkie, whether you have access to charging, and how you weigh the REEV’s electric refinement against the proven long-term track record of a conventional diesel. But as a technology concept, REEV is one of the more sensible answers to South Africa’s electrification challenge that has landed on local roads so far.
